Details from James Silver (BK4205)
Excepts from letter written in Oct. 1945, Alexander Ross Silver he was in the Army Air Corps serving in Britain and visited the George Robertson family in Aberdeen.
"George is, of course, very busy at the ship yards and, I believe they said he teaches at the Technical College several evenings per week. He seemed to me to be much more like a Silver that the other of my cousins. Guess he hardly thought the same of me, as he remarked that he thought it strange that his cousins from the U.S. retained so little of the Scottish characteristics, even though only one generation removed from Scotland. We looked through a family album and there were some that he didn't recognize any more than I did. He also showed me his dress kilt, and I found out for the first time that the kilt is wrapped around the waist instead of stepped into.
On the afternoon of the day I arrived Mrs. Robertson took the baby and Derek and me in the car to Sunnyside and various other points of interest in Lower Deeside. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the maple and sycamore leaves were fully colored, in contrast to the dark green and silver of the fir and spruce.
The entire countryside reminded me of a well kept park...We also saw old St. Mary's Church yard, and the grave of my grandparents, which I took a picture of that did not turn out at all...
Next we went to St. Devenicks Parish Church, thinking that was the one Father had attended, but the lady of the manse said that the one you attended must have been St. Devenick's-on-the-hill, a mile and a half away.
However, the lady of the manse showed us an old school building practically on the grounds of St. Devenick's Parish church which she said you must have attended, and just over the wall from the school yard there was a cemetery with an 'iron coffin' still lying against the wall, which the lady thought you would surely remember. Leaving the Parish Church we drove to St. Devenick's -on-the-hill and I saw the cemetery where Aunt Isa is buried.
In the same cemetery, there was quite a roster of Silvers. I had no idea that the clan was so numerous, but the minister's wife at the Parish Church, while she didn't recognize any of the names I could think of, said that there were a good many families of that name in the surrounding parishes, but that the last Silver family she know of had moved to a place near Stonehaven several years ago (That would be the Silvers of Harvieston farm, the family of James Silver who went to Australia).
Incidentally, the Churches of St. Devenick's on-the-hill, and St. Devenick's Parish Church now have one minister between them...I was shown the park wherein the Knights Templars Hospitallers cemetery is, which the Robertsons said was the place where my ancestors more than 100 years removed had been buried, but the British Army has reserved the park and it would have taken several days to get permission to enter."
