ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AT BRUNSWICK
A case of attempted suicide occurred at Brunswick on Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, when a man named Robert Isaac Borrington, residing in Port Melbourne, endeavoured to destroy himself at the house of his brother- in-law William De La Garde, living in George-street, East Brunswick, whom he was visiting. It appears that De La Garde had occasion to go into the room of his relative, and then observed Borrington holding a razor to his throat. Just as he was in the act of applying it, Da La Garde rushed up to him, and succeeded, after a struggle, in extracting it from his grasp. De La Garde then left the room for a few moments, and on returning was surprised to find that Borrington had made his exit from the dwelling. Information was at once conveyed to the police, and, after several hours' search, Constable Simmons and De La Garde discovered the would-be suicide at the Moonee Ponds Creek, near Union-street, where it was supposed he intended to again make another effort to commit self-destruction. He was arrested and sent to the Melbourne Gaol. Borrington has been employed for many years in the Railway department, and has held important positions, being a well educated man. His attempt to destroy himself was due, it was stated, to family troubles.

A PECULIAR ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.
At the Brunswick Police Court on Wednesday morning, before Mr. Alley, P.M, and Messrs. Stranger, Straw, Methven, Fleming, Crook, and Dr. Talbot, J P.'s, a man of about 50 years of age, named Robert Isaac Bodington, was charged with attempting to commit suicide on Saturday morning. It appears that the accused, who was for many yeurs engaged on the railways, but is now a presser in a clothing factory, was on a visit to his brother in-law, Mr. de la Garde, residing in George- street, near the East Brunswick omnibus stables, and was sitting down at breakfast, when suddenly he seized a knife, with the intention of cutting his throat. Mrs. de la Garde took hold of the blade of the instrument, and with great difficulty prevented the attempt. Mrs. de la Garde said that her brother was separated from his wife, who lived in Hotham, and had sold the house over her husband's head. A certificate from Dr. Shields was read to the effect that the accused under proper supervision would rapidly recover. Bodington admitted that he had acted foolishly, but remarked that now that his old thoughts had gone out of his mind he would never attempt to destroy himself again. The Bench remanded the accused for a week.
